Description
Following on from my portrait of The Black Rose (Róisín Dubh Ní Néill), I thought I'd chance my arm at another illustration that obliquely references an album from my personal list of favourites.
"My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" is a novel by Nigerian author Amos Tutuola (which ironically neiither Byrne or Eno ever read!), which tells the story of a young nameless protagonist who becomes lost in the bush after fleeing from slave traders and their adventures with a host of bizarre and often frightening beings and spirits in the attempt to get home. Its a truly unique novel, steeped in folklore with a modern twist (one of the ghosts has television hands). Its disjointed structure and use of simple, almost conversational, language creates something that is both otherwordly and charming... and decidedly odd.
Despite never having read it, Brian Eno and David Byrne took this title for their eerily unsettling and groundbreaking 1981 collaboration that remains something of a revolutionary sonic statement, now widely acknowledged as a materpiece despite mixed reviews at the time.

A fascinating work of art you've created here - dark but engaging at the same time. It's interesting how one work of art - be it an image, writing, or whatever can inspire other works.
