General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark. It was one of the very few airplanes that could fly over long distances and at high speed just above the treetops. Apart from it, there were only the Tornado and the Su-24, which had a terrain-following radar that allowed them to operate automatically at high speed at extremely low altitudes. This was the only way to fly deep into enemy territory as unnoticed as possible. Such aircraft were very difficult to intercept, as guided missiles could only operate with difficulty against the ground and interceptors had little chance of stalking them at the same altitude to avoid ground clutter.
