LUCIUS AELIUS SEJANUS was commander of the Praetorian Guard and the Emperor Tiberius' right-hand man, helping the depraved Emperor bring in a reign of terror against the Roman people. But in 31 A.D., Tiberius became convinced that Sejanus had begun plotting to remove him and seize the Imperial throne for himself (he probably was), and so he ordered Sejanus' arrest on the floor of the Senate itself. The arrest was carried out by NAEVIUS SUTORIUS MACRO (who eventually was forced to commit suicide a few years later during the reign of CALIGULA, himself having fallen out of Imperial favor), Sejanus' second-in-command, as the Senators, who had long lived in fear of Sejanus, jeered the hated Praetorian Prefect's downfall. Sejanus, along with his children and a large number of his allies were executed on Tiberius' orders soon afterwards, and the streets and the steps of the Senate literally ran red with blood for quite some time.
