Description

*No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of a Continent.* J.Donne ------------------ This is my contribution to the January Theme "Fire and Ice". It portraits one specific moment of the legend of Demeter, Goddess of Ground, and her daughter Persephone, raped and caged by the God of Afterlife, Ades, fallen in love with her. It shows the theme by the vivid, burning love of the mother discovering the daughter like dead, almost iced in my scene, and it's also my way to say that a heart pulsating love is a flame, an heart who cannot feel this is instead destined to shadows and cold realms. You can then give your own interpretation of everything , of course. I can say so far it seems that to colour in Photoshop is pushin me at using very strong and sparklin colours :P In this, I owe much to Japanes cartoons :P This is my second attempt at Photoshop proper colouring.. I have to say it will take time before the result in colour will match the sketch uncoloured (sigh!) but I am still learning. Hope you can enjoy, and if you're interested, you can find the legend in the various versions here: The Legend of Demeter and Persephone

This is outstanding! The composition, the colors, the emotion are all so very strong. Beautiful interpretation of the myth!

"6 months in hell and 6 months in earth i shall remain" said Persefone, due to her mortal inmortality, linked to hades but so closed to her mother... youve captured the esence of those seassons, the "hot" side of the life on 6 months on the earth and the "cold" of the dead from hell, and the love and hate, the happiness and the frustration of a mother that has her daughter back with her, but only the half of time of her existence. You improved a lot too with psp painting!!! -I agree too with abmlober, the diagonal composition is perfect, like dividing two worlds so separated but at the same time so close that they can touch each other. Thanks for all youve done for me, your words opened some unknown ways on my mind See you soon !!

What a nice post :-) I think you got the contrast between fire and ice very well. The diagonal composition, the low saturation of the cold colours - all seems very good to me. But as always - I would love to see the original sketch posted here :-)

The most sensual passions are really difficult to convey, the hand cradled within her hair is a painting in itself. Excellently done and the subject is something that I'm just now exploring.

I think it's stunning! The bold colouring works, and you've captured the essence of the duality so well with your perfectly placed strokes.

It looks great. A nice contrast to the December Theme. Now it's humans and mythology and so colorful.. :) Shows the wideness of your skills. :) So great...again. :) :)

Beautifully drawn and the vibrant colours add a world of depth. The clear divison between warm and cool, the classical pose of the figures themselves and the gentle ( and if I may add ambigious) interaction between the two figures...it goes beyond the myth and re-creates a story all of it's own.

So intimate and so full of pathos. I like Persephone's tousled hair draped over her face... so much suffering is shown here. I can see the connection with the Japanese style, particularly the vivid yellows :-)

The colors and their value ramps define the image very clearly without loss of human dimension. You can be pleased with this effort.

I think, i am not the only one, who wanted to convince you, to work with colors. Thanks god, because you have a great feeling for colors. It is amazing to see, how fast you are learning. I think not far away, I'm your Pupil, not your Teacher.
