As I understand it, fuel is injected into the air inlet (the manifold elbow nearest the camera), and drawn into the cylinders by vacuum. There is no cam action on the intake valves.

I've been to the museum at Kill Devil hills..according to the staff, this was built by one of their employees, from scratch, and only lasted a few minutes, and then had to be rebuilt. Good work.
