Description

"I can't write about the program behind my art. Because I reckon this is up to scholars and academics,or better, this is up to posterity even, who works from a teorical and scientific, and not creative, point of view. The source of artistic force is in the unconscious and spontaneous. So any kind of critic to any finished piece is possible from me only by a sensitive point of view." Erich Heckel -------------------------------------------- This is my homage to Expressionism, subject is STARVING, and it's made in pencil 2B. Quite different from my usual style ;) I guess :P --------------------------------------- The Expressionism is often related in artistical definition to a number of characteristic of any work which is meant to express the individual feeling of the artist through his images more than a realistic approach and portrait of the objectivity of the world outside. The Expressionism forces the viewer to feel with immediate link the emotions and the psychological reactions of the art creator towards what he lives and experiences and THINKS. But in the proper meaning and role in Art History, the Expressionism is a wave which applies to the German painters of the first decades of 1900, who wanted to get beyond the rendition of visual reality around them, breakin with the impressionism roots in full. For understanding the Expressionism, it's useful to remember those who paved the road for it, being in the middle between impressionism , fauves and expressionism itself:Van Gogh, Gaugin, Ensor, and Munch. And a certain heritage is also in the works of painters linked to the fantastic such as Goya, Blake, Redon. But if in these artists we can find pre elements of expressionism linked to symbolistic languages, it's only in Dresda, 1905, that the real Expressionsm comes, through 4 architecture students's plans of creating a society called Die Brucke (The Bridge), an union of wills against the tradition and for the freedom of expression. Their basilar belief is "the emotional experience of life", namely the portraying of the reality following the emotion that the meeting with it blossoms into the artist, through the coming further away from true representation of objects seen and the progressive deleting of the 3d dimension, which is seen like nothing but fake space and fake volume for them. The three major names of the Bridge were Kirchner, Heckel, and Schmidt-Rottluff. In Austria, a variation of Expressionism of huge impact was lead by Kokoschka, and under different and very personal perspective, by Egon Schiele.

Did you come up with this concept? It is absolutely stunning. I stared at it for at least 5 minutes straight sucking in it's disconcerting intensity. This really is brilliant. I have just started drawing for the first time since I was a kid and I do hope that, in the near future, I can match this in terms of it's ability to evoke a real response.

Very nice drawing meli... and is indeed very different than what you normally post... this to me is a very emotionally driven piece that is a very good drawing example of the expressionism movement. I think that adding color to this piece would make it a more effective piece and a better example of this movement though. Color alone can express feelings, and adding some color to this, even if in a very slight way, would be a huge emotional plus. What I mean by that is maybe add a few expressive colored pencil outlines or shades of color in certain areas to create more color contrasts. It is a very nice drawing... but I also think that you could improve it... just trying to help :)

We dance to such a short song! The lights go out the music fades, the mystery begins to vanish. You begin to say, "This man who has an extraordinary vision of tomorrow is beginning to stink of Jesterday!" That which has become revealed has soured the unexpected. Your hands no longer grope in the dark because you believe you have gotten a hold of something. It was fun while it lasted but the curtain has gone down and the crowd begins to exit stage right. The building is abandoned and implodes leaving a beautiful cloud of destruction upon the city skyline. Just like that, the man you thought you were beginning to know has gone up in a pillar of smoke and vanished like breath on cold winter morning. Goodbye all!

Dear Meli, I'm not a master of comments since find it very uneasy to find proper words for my emotions and feelings. This is so unique and individual. I'm simply fascinated the power of the composition. Though it is not Your typical manner, You are right, Your inimitable style is definitely the most striking factor of expressiveness of this masterpiece!

I think the visual that is so powerful here is the distended belly of the baby...disturbing because when starvation is present in the Mother and the baby, nutrition is nonexistent and the stomach swells with fluid as the rest of the body takes on the appearance of retraction in the mother and the child. The Mother, in an attempt to give her child whatever life she can she will extact from this Earth (represented by the the tentacles), but it is not enough...not enough for her to gain any strength...not enough for her baby to obtain ay nutrition...and so starvation wins or so it would seem...only if we let it!
