Description

Savannah's Bonaventure Cemetery became the final resting place for little Graice Watson. Gracie was born in 1883 and was the only child of her parents. Her father was manager of the Pulaski House, one of Savannah's leading hotels, where the beautiful and charming little girl was a favorite with the guests. Two days before Easter, in 1889, Gracie died of pneumonia at the age of six. In her memory, her father had this life-size sculpture carved, which for over a century has captured the interest of all passerby. Trees are often portrayed as symbols of life. The cut-down tree trunk on which Gracie rests her hand represents the Gracie's life and the fact that it was cut short. The vine that wraps the trunk is a reminder of her Christian faith-Christ pruning the vine. Legend has it that her ghost still haunts the area around her tomb. It is said that sounds of laughter, and on occasion, sounds of crying, can be heard-yet there is no physical form present. Photographs often capture distorted images of what appears to be a little girl. Standing there, face-to-face with Gracie's tomb, one cannot help but get chills. Personally, I believe in the supernatural, but I do not believe in "ghost." What about you? What do you think?

Yes, that is a terrific shot with a very intresting story to match. I do believe in God, but I do not believe in ghosts...though I'm sure Satan would like us to.

Wonderful image. What a heart-breaking story. I love how the sculptor captured the little girl's appearance so beautifully; it makes me feel as if she's still around in spirit. I've always thought Savannah was beautiful; thank you for sharing this. :)
