Description

The first of a series exploring the varying archetypal images of Merlin. The old wizard has fascinated me for more than half a century and my vision of him has changed a lot over those years. This image shows him as I've come to see him recently--as an 'eminence gris,'(sic) a power-broker who rules his king from the shadows of the court. This is a far cry from the Merlin of my youth who was a Druid priest of the forests of Herne.

Superb.A great face and I like the floating book. L'eminence gris is certainly contemplating.I look forward to your series.

Really good image patricia I have only one suggestion for an improvement, unless this is the effect you were hoping for, it seems to me his body doesn't match his age perhaps his hands should be more gnarled or some liver spots. Just my opinion.

Thank you both :) Wanderer--if you could only see the original image! I spent 4 solid hours painstakingly painting in freckles and liverspots and scars....then Photoshop 'optimized' it for the Web and it was all lost to "JPEG under 512K" requirements...sigh.

Bravo! I've always visualized Merlin as almost a changeling...old and new at will.

Thank you--this is very encouraging :) Looking at it with fresh eyes, I see that I forgot 2 merchants, darn it...the hair (heavily postworked and tipped so it's inside the head at the top) is TotalHairComplete by HMann and the billowing cloak is Rubio'sSheet.

That's an excellent portrait, very original. Love the expression you've managed to convey, and the sheer amount of personality in his face.

Rather nice piece of work. You have captured a sense of pensiveness that suits so well.
