Description

(image revised on may 11, 2003) Dear Steve, Well, here I am again! This is nothing like Penn State for sure. Sorry I didn't write sooner. But you know how it is. Got sniper fire on the first day. But no one got hurt. Scared the sh-t out of me! But the guys said everyone gets scared the first time. Since then we've been in 3 firefights with irregulars and we're all still okay. I'm doing better now. But I'm still scared when it happens. Last week, I started going out on patrols. Nothing to report. The local people are pretty scared, too. They've been through a lot between the terror squads and the bombings. So I guess we're even. Today, we got a lot more smiles from the kids. This country is amazing. One minute you're in desert with sand and dirt like the stuff Aunt Boo used to use for her roses. The next minute you're going through green fields that look like pictures from the magazines. Not a lot of water around except where they've built irrigation ditches. It's been 3 months since I got over here and I had a dream about Paul last night. We were at the prom. Weird, huh? At least I had a good time this time. No hangover! I know you're against this war. And I know you think I'm crazy for going. But I have a job to do too. And I don't want to let my friends here down. I don't know anything about politics. But I think we're doing what needs to be done. (I know you won't agree with me. But we agree to disagree, OK?) I know you worry about me. And I'm not mad anymore about the argument. So don't worry, OK? You and I disagree on everything. So, I'm OK! OK???? Don't forget to give Sparky a new chew toy every week. And my fish tank needs to be cleaned. I hate that icky green stuff! Let everyone know I'm OK. Big hugs for Grams and Gramps. And one for you, too! Tell mom I love her. I'll be home soon. Your little sis, Lucy rendered in poser 5, post-work in photoshop. thank you for looking and for your comments.

It is rare that an image in these galleries strikes me so hard emotionally and brings me to tears, but that is what this one has done. Had you allowed ratings I would have given you the highest possible one. This is art at it's best...Powerful, emotional and thought provoking. Bravo.

There are good people and bad people. While most people have a mix of the two, it is almost never an even mix.

Dash101: You're not alone buddy. I'm listening! t rt: Not intended to stir you up, but, you work at Disney World or what? spook: Outstanding! You've taken away the gloss and rhetoric...a terrible price, but pay a little now, or a lot later.

Who dies is up to chance, who dies a hero is up to the press, who dies with honor is up to god.

Nasty, nasty counterpoint between the simple good-heartedness of the text and the savage cruelty of the visuals. Speaks for both sides in this tragedy - and for a great artist, Spook! And yes, God, or Allah (the same, according to the mohamedans) bless all those people whose lot it is "but to do and die", whether from bullets, shrapnel or DU - the tragedy is the same for all.

This image reminds me of my fellow West Virginian Jessica Lynch. There's a lot of speculation here about the actual extent of her injuries.

It's nice to something that understands the true meaning of peace on this site.
