Have you played with Deep Paint 3D yet - download the trial version its worth the effort - unfortunately just VERY expensive - but I can see this is what you're missing.... You have the imagination and the tools already! hair on the horse is excellent and good lighting - you could even be more dramatic with the lights and try to drop some grainy-ness into the final render to have us all believing you were there!!
