So I decided to make a seperate small little tutorial. I am no tutorial maker of profession so do this at your own risk. :P
Volumetric lighting is a simple process, actually. There's a trick to it. The simple way to do it is by adding volumetric lighting to your lights in the environment>effects>rollout. I used a direct light with a pretty wide hotspot and falloff area without any attenuation.
When adjusting the settings for the volumetrics I first made sure that the direct light had raytraced shadows with a bias of 4 then I adjust only the density of the volumetric lighting, all the way down to 0,1 you can test from there on between settings of 0,1 and 2,1 with more light for higher settings.
I also used 1 omni light with no shadows with a very low multiplier (0,124) to give the scene some more ambient lighting.
Here's a small example I quickly put together for you. Lighting is the most important thing in your scene. It's important to experiment a lot with all settings until you get the desired effect. I watch a lot of Manga and animation films to learn how to light a scene properly. If you can get your hands on it, try to find one called 'Blood: The Last Vampire'. These people are the masters of lighting and their animation and 3d skills are unparralelled throughout the entire business.
