Description

Now for something completely different! This is saltwater-filled Mono Lake, in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, near the town of Lee Vining, California. It's been a favorite of photographers for years because of these odd "tufa" formations--calcium carbonate stacks formed underwater by freshwater springs and exposed by dropping lake levels. They're all over the rather large lake. I shot this last week, my first time there. It was surreal, fascinating and very beautiful. Thanks for taking a look. :)

Mono lake rules. There's some awesome ones in Sierra Club magazines of it (tho yours is nice too =D) Did you get it at sunset?

I have been there 4 times..it's an awesome place. Going again in a couple of weeks. Fantastic capture. Love those fly swarms, too!

Oooooh, cool. I can see why photographers would flock to this place...facinating formations. Excellent shot too . Beautiful deep blue sky.

It is surreal for sure!!! It reminds me heavily of landscapes in Dali's "Memory Persistence".. same feeling of space. You are a wizard :)

Beautifully composed, there's something going on in the background and the foreground. The colors and light are amazing - it adds to the surreal feeling along with the tufa formations :)))

Thanks for the kind comments. :) By the way, as viewlenz noticed, those black patches and little black dots everywhere are "alkali flies." Weirdest thing... they swarm all over the shore, but have no interest in people at all. They just move out of the way when you get near them.

Amazing place.....your very dark polarized sky lends a surreal feeling to the image. :~)

Wanted to say exactly what Akinom did - had already copied your description to paste it in there (normally I hate copy & paste...)

You find the most interesting places Steve:) As has already been said this seems very surreal. The depth you've created from foreground out really pulls my eyes out of their sockets:))
