Description

The first of 2 images featuring Mary Magdalen--This one is in the style of the Symbolists and depicts the Magdalen of French legend in a dream-like, vaguely medieval setting in Southern France, looking out over the mountains near St. Baume. When I was traveling in France, I discovered that she has a huge following there. Many churches are dedicated to her, some of which have Black Madonnas or some other connection to the Knights Templar, who were said to be especially devoted to her. I was surprised to find her altars and those of the Black Madonnas piled high with fruits and gourds--symbols of fertility--in churches where every other altar was bare of offerings. I believe this indicates a modern continuation of an ancient women

The two men on the horse symbolise the Templars' most ancient insignia. The Tower is of course herself as Migdal means "of the tower". The gold capped vase stands for the balm with which she anointed the Savior, and the fact she is the patron of perfumers as it's secret ingredient was her tears. She is appropriately in Green as the Lady of the green language or the Language of Birds-- Symbolism itself. The Lady of the Green language is the Queen of the South or the Black Madonna. And Green is the color of Netzatch the sphere of the Tree of Life to which she corresponds-- God reached through ecstacy. A powerful and meaningful work!
