This has potential. I would first reconmend trying to make your ships as detailed as possible (more primitives, booleans, lattices). The more you put into it, the more it'll pay off. Second, I would try experimenting with textures. I always found creating/finding the right texture is the hardest part and can make or break an image. Look around for some good tutorials on texturing in Bryce. And third, the give not only a sense of depth, but also to make it appear that the planet has an atmosphere, I would make that sphere fuzzy. To do this, edit the texture and click on the little arrow towards the right top of the screen. Choose fuzzy (or whatever it's called). Everybody's got to start somewhere. I'm still trying to improve myself (I have plenty of room to grow, if you know what I mean). So, good effort (and sorry for such a long winded comment). :)

Actually, this image isn't all that bad. The only problem is the ships. As mentioned above, they need detail. As we LEGO-builders call them, "greeblies." Greeblies are details that are just thrown on, sort of, and are numerous. Don't make it so you can't see anything, but make it more realistic. However, the planet is magnificent. I wish I could make planets like that.
