Description
This image is in memory of my mother-in-law who died yesterday aged 93.
She lived with us for 13 years, and I had cared for her 24/7 for the last 18 months or so.
She was a lady who had lived through 2 world wars, and many smaller conflicts, who has seen 4 kings and a queen on the throne.
She had a long life, if never an easy one. Widowed at the end of the 2nd world war she brought her own family up alone, and then went on to bring up some of her grandchildren when her daughter tragically died young.
A hard worker all her life, she only finally gave up working altogether when she was 80.
She had a phenomenal memory and could tell many a tale of how things were in the past. But she never lived in the past, but embraced modern life. She didn't learn to use a computer, but appreciated the marvel of the thing.
She thought it was wonderful that her brother could type a letter from down in the south west and 5 minutes later I could print it out for her here in the south east.
She loved all my faeries from the pre-school ones to the older larger ones who needed large wings to take off. She asked me to make her pictures for her to send to people. In fact she bought me transponds wild flowers for my birthday and then demanded I make her a picture using them for her birthday a week later.
This image has grown over a period of time. After every hospital visit another figure has been added, with the final touch being the petals which I hoped not to have to include.
I did it this way to stop the anger and depression which I felt for an old lady who had lived so long and fought so hard, only to be defeated in the end by the inadequacies of our British national health system.
She would not want us to mourn her, but we will remember her.
