Description
A pure Bryce render with no postwork
A late autumn afternoon, the year is 1846 and the place is the Western Isles of Scotland.
The men and older boys are off fishing, in a company boat, to earn some money for food. The older Girls and young women are on their way back from tending the livestock which comprises a few scrawny cows for milk and a few sheep to provide wool for jerseys and homespun.
The only people left in the village are the old people, pregnant women and small children.
This is the time the factor chooses to send in his men to evict the crofters and set fire to the thatched roofs, which also destroys the roof timbers. There are no trees in the Isles, so it is not possible to rebuild.
The crofters had lived in this area for many generations.
A true happening, a bad time in our history, of which I was reminded by picking up a book at random to read.

Aye, the factor's fire razers. I first learned of this through the songs of Alisdair MacDonald. When I think of pages like this in Scotland's history I weep with you. In such moments, I too am a Scottsman (much the way the world's heart felt when my country was in flames on Sept 11, 2001). Your picture is a wonderful memorial of a sad time when cowards held power. Blessings to you.

That was indeed a shocking and most upseting event... however, I can not ignor the wonderful work you have created. It's amazing that you were able to acheive such an outcome with no postwork what so ever. The textures are fantastic and the image looks as if it was painted on canvas. Excellent work of art!

A beautiful rendition of a bleak period in Scotlands history. This image speaks volumes and touches my heart 'cos my family come from the isles and this is part of us. 8)

thank heavens my Scottish ancestors had already departed for Texas..;) Of course, compared to what they were doing to the Irish..but that's another story..

The two figures are excellently done as is the composition. The depiction of the fire and the smoke is fastastic considering it was done only in bryce with no postwork.

Excellen work on the atmosphere here. You can almost hear the fire, smell the smoke and see the desperation on the people's faces.

This image speaks volumes. Not only of the times depicted, but of the artist who so vividly depicted them. It's an amazing image, Pam. It takes your breath away. Congratulations. Q
