Taken at the Planes of Fame Museum Airshow 2003 at Chino Airport, California. (5/17/03)
Aircraft is a Boeing (Formerly McDonnell Douglas) F/A-18 Super Hornet. This was after the heritage flight she did with a WW2 F4U Corsair and F8F Bearcat. They usually have the F-18 do a low high speed pass... This year I was ready for it. With my new camera, I set the shutter speed to 1/4,000 of a second. Now, I must say that when she comes over, the sound is UNBEARABLY loud. You have a split second to take this photo before you can't help but shake the camera because of the sound. I snapped this shot as she streaked over at a good 550+mph. You can even see the vapor trails forming above her wings! The second after I shot this very lucky shot, I prepared myself for the sound which was trailing after the fighter. It was so loud, I thought I was going to crush my camera from squeezing it so hard! Loud, yes, but TOTALLY awesome! It's the sound of freedom! :-D
Camera is a digital Minolta Dimage 7hi (5 MP). This image has been shrunk down to 33% of the original full size. Auto Focus (no time for manual), custom white balance and exposure settings (it was overcast, so I had to comp for that), and shutter speed of course is 1/4000.

I hear you! (no pun intended :) Ive been to several shows at Norfolk naval air station, and I lived under the landing pattern for Oceana in Va Beach, those suckers are loud! Congrats on a great capture!

Sweet shot! I love how you got the vapor off the wings. I know the feeling...we had an F-15 eagle at the Abbotsford Airshow last weekend and it did a couple of high speed passes (not to mention the Blue Angels), you could feel it in your bones...again- sweet shot.
