Description

A void, indistinguishable in the blackness, creaking floorboards reiterating malevolence. Eyes adjusting my throat locks into a breathless whispered scream as I'm held to the bed by terror. Hands tighten around my exposed neck and my chest is crushed with the weight of his knees, no breath, no escape. ~ Sleeping in the supine position (on your back) can sometimes trigger sleep paralysis, releasing your nightmares into reality. The source of the Incubus and Succubus legend, most people experience this terrifying sensation at least once in their lives, fortunately not remembering it. ~ Sketched in Photoshop V7 for this month's theme in the 2D forum. Thanks for viewing :)

terrifying, unable to make out the dark shadows as my sleep widens in fright, thankfully if this had happened i don't remember it, very intriguing thought & accompanying image :]

Where's the image? All I see is a little bit of something in the lower right? Perhaps it's just my monitor being stupid.

Very scary! I can't say I recall this ever happening to me and I'm so thankful I can't! But I don't need the paralysis to be terrified of the succubus. Your image is perfect for this fear. :)

Christ Cass, this is the ultimate ambiguity: I said once before that I think the reason people can be scared of the dark is that the void, the lack of visual input, allows the mind to fill in the blanks with whatever it wants. By using only the darkest tones you've succeeded in capturing this feeling that reminds me of scary nights when I was little, caught in my own imagination, although (touch wood) I've been fortunate enough never to have experienced sleep paralysis as yet (or if I have I've no memory of it whatsoever). A great idea here and genuinely creepy hugs :-)

I used to have those sleep paralysis nightmares all the time when I was in highschool, they were mortifying. These experiences were accompanied by auditory vibrations, sort of a dull humming coming closer and closer. Everynow and then I will experience a recurrence of these, usually after staying up too late studying. I've decided it's not succubus but Aliens trying to suck my brain and fill me with false memories...I used to be someone else I know it. I'm not crazy... I'm not!!!!!!

As he put it, "the void, the lack of visual input, allows the mind to fill in the blanks with whatever it wants. " You've captured that very effectively!

The state of my monitor settings when I first opened this made the impact all the more powerful. I had the Brightness set down and could pale hints of what was there more than anything, just as when you first open your eyes in an all but utterly dark room. As I tapped the controls, I was slowly left with something still largely insubstantial, yet still undeniably present. A wraith in the night, but even more frightening. This is an awesome job, VERY well done:D As another someone who has experienced all too real seeming apparitions in the night, I think this is great, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the great comments everyone :) Although the imagination makes some great things out of the dark, this isn't really what sleep paralysis is. In this state, you hallucinate, the apparition is actually in front of you as if truely there. You can see, hear, feel, smell and even taste the sensation as is that real.
