Description
Most flying insects like butterflies have an accelerated view for movement! So my body-motion is always very slow when I approach a butterfly! The higher the weather-temperature the slower my movement! When you're in reach, you're eager to shoot and will have a quick upward movement of the camera to the eye. Butterflies can/will take that movement for a possible attack, it will cost you many a good shot! Therefore, if I don't forget, I approach the butterfly slow with the camera close to my head!
This picture is no crop, so the composition is made on spot, that costs a lot of precious time!
If I stayed a little further away I would have had the time to take more shots! Afterwards I then would have made a comfortable recomposition-crop at home! What would be your choice????

A week ago I decided that I wasn't ill anymore! The Flu-buggers didn't agree with that and treated me on another week of high-fever-havock! The positive thing is that I lost 6 kilo without any effort! @Ratto I'm a lean mean Bionda now!!!

Great Shot! I like it as it is. Recomposing it via computer may result in a better picture, but this is the real thing. I prefer real things, especially if they're that good ;-)

Well from our discussions you know I prefer the in-camera option but I do believe that you can make some wonderful improvements with cropping.. Good advice there Papa also if you wear drab clothing and sit still near a favoured plant you just wait for them to come to you..

What a Shot! The advice is priceless. I am throwing away My Floral Frocks and will only wear Plain Jane. Everything You suggest...I have done the opposite...I run at the Butty's...they fly off :[

Papa's back! We all glad to see you again, you know it! As to the picture -- I can not see anything bad in this particular cropping, on the opposite! It is close to perfection! With the experiense comes the mastership, so you can plan the composition strictly on the plase and do not have to give up the quality... this one is definitely from the very best of your butterflies! :-) Feel well and don't let us miss you!

Awesome shot as always. I tend to take a couple shots as i work my way in, you know those just incase shots. I commend you, these guys/gals are very hard to capture, you make it look so easy.

Great comping. We've recently set up a fairly decent Butterfly Garden Exhibit here at work. Had a hell of a time setting up the ID's. That a Great Mormon? Looks similar except for the orange tinting at the bottom. Oh well I'm extremely rusty on my entomology. Wonderful regardless of the species

Thanks for the tips on how to shoot butterflies! I myself would do my composing and cropping in camera. Which is probably why I miss so many good shots.... but what I find is that the more you crop into an image the poorer the quality seems to become, even if you're using film....I hope you understand what I mean... more grain, less sharpness....

I find that with the high resolution of my new Canon digital, I can crop effectively without too much loss of quality, especially if I creatively apply some softening or noise reduction to diminish the grain. IMO, there's no "right" way to do this... there are lots of ways to come up with a beautiful image, and here you've found one of them. :) Gorgeous specimen and fantastic shot as always Papa!! :)

the more difficult and rare it gets, and the most difficult work "on place" it request to the photographer, the more value stays in it so this picture to me is the best you can try to obtain. You showed you had perfectly in mind the vision of it and chose how to take the pic cropping it in your mind on place. This is highly valuable.It shows artistic vision.
