Description

Black Pilot pen (0.1mm) and white Rotring technical pen (0.1mm), 168x147mm, summer 1992. I decided to continue the "Embryonic" series I ran for a while late last year, showing selected works from the past, usually natural media. I'm actually surprised I didn't post this one last year, but maybe I just couldn't find the picture to scan at the time. Oh well, I got there in the end ;-) I was 17 at the time. The style was influenced by numerous pen and ink artists, not least the legendary fellwalker Wainwright who is something of a guru for walkers over here, even posthumously... click on the link to check it out, this is a guy who walked hundreds of miles each year right up to his death and published dozens of exhaustive and intricate guides to all the UK's areas of beauty, all completely written and illustrated by his own painstaking hand. People like that never die :-) This scene was copied from a photo in one of my dad's books of Scotland: if I remember correctly the lake is Loch Sunart, one I've holidayed beside several times. A really gorgeous place :-) I made a mistake on the tree trunk, it bulges too much higher up... but then some trees are weird ;-) Thanks for looking, and for your feedback. Two more to post in this style :-)

Well, I should really credit the photographer who took the original shot for the book: I believe it was Derry Brabbs.

This is wonderful. Your trees are great, as, yes, they do often have shapes of their own, sometimes strange and twisted, so I see no flaw there. Great depth and detail.

The use of black is pretty astonishing. The trees are exceptionally good, because of how you used the black and white there. Now they have some sort of 3D effect.

It is so interresting to se old works of artists. So different from the Jim I have seen, but not surprising. I like it very much, it is done with skill and eye for light and shad, and as Cyn says, would make a great lito!
