Description

Black Pilot pen (0.1mm) and white Rotring technical pen (0.1mm) on A5 paper, 1993 In spring 1993 I was in the final terms of my A-Level years at school. For my Theatre Studies course I worked on a short 5 minute presentation entitled Endangered inspired by the destruction of indigenous indians' natural homes, involving a short series of projected images and a soundtrack I made myself. I didn't have a 4-track cassette recorder of my own at the time so I borrowed the school's own to make this. It integrated recordings of songs by indigenous peoples such as these. The indian was sourced from an article in the September 1971 issue of National Geographic (my dad collected them from 1970-72) about the Cinta Larga indians of Brazil, one of the last Stone Age peoples of Earth. The face was hard to do and I'm still not happy with the lack of definition in the eyes. I can't remember the source for the backdrop of felled trees, possibly it was another issue of the Geographic. This image was photocopied onto acetate for the projection. That year I failed A-Level Theatre Studies. Reading things like Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard left me wholly unmoved. I wasn't interested anyway: I'd opted for Performing Arts for the musical aspect, but after the first term it became Theatre Studies after the music teacher left. Damn. Not great timing :P Thank you as always for taking a look, and for your feedback. Tomorrow I'll post the other illustration I made for this project :-)

There's a lot of detail in these words. The background is very good. The trees are done very well (again). I'm not sure about the indian though... he looks kinda like "oh what do I care, we still got our casinos" ;]

Except that this indian had neither seen nor heard of a casino in his life... at least when his photo was taken ;-)

I feel blessed to have had a sneak preview of these latest uploads, this is definatly my favourite! You didn't have to tell me what its about, I think the message is quite clear - the pain these, and other, displaced people feel is starkly realised. Thank you SO much for sharing this Jim, something so different from you, yet still entirely emotional :) :) :)

Ohhhh, it's so strange, and such a pleasure to see these old pieces from you. This is great work, but so unlike what I've come to recognize as 'you' aesthetically. Glad you're posting these.

Very very cool - with emotions. The face is proud and sad. Backgound view tells its cruel truth. -- The ink technique is so marvellous. Thanks for deciding to post this series. :-D
