Description

7B pencil on cartridge paper, 214x257mm, scanned and processed in Photoshop 7 and Painter 8: inverting (negativizing), colour tinting and smoothing Following dear Cassie's inspiration, this was an attempt I made to get back into pencil drawing on the evening of the 30th December. It was done very much in the manner of my "lunchtime doodles", beginning with no plan whatsoever and letting the image evolve along the way. I have to say I didn't enjoy doing this (wrong time I guess) and am not particularly happy with the result... but I let it stand as an experiment. Something unsettling about this, I think it's the composition, a lot seems "pushed up" in to the top left corner, but if so then it means an emotional reaction can be gleaned, so I guess it's a success on this level at least ;-) I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all my friends here simply for being a part of this world at the same time as me... and to wish everyone good health and a prosperous 2004 :-) Jim

The work may have felt and even appear a little forced to you, but to me it actually adds to this image! It almost tears me inside to look at and feel the pain radiating from it as it appears to go up in flames. Thank you SO much for creating and sharing this Jim, I really truely like this image and would love to see some more ;) HUGS

Well, I don't think I even have the energy to scream right now, I really can't be bothered :-)

Sure the composition is unsettling, that's what makes it work so well! There's such a powerful feeling of entrapment, a skeletal rigidity which appears to be straining in an attempt to transform itself into something, soft, organic & free. Do more, please!!
