Description
The XM-3 is a fictional weapon, based on the concept of the XM-8 lightweight assault rifle, which is currently under development and will replace the M-4 and M-16 in the US Forces within the comming decade. Both the real XM-8 (which will be called the M-8 once it is in service) and my fictional XM-3 (which will likewise be called M-3 after development is finished) are based on the Heckler & Koch G-36 system, but my design goes one step further and is based no more on the .223 Remington (5,56x45mm NATO) catridge. Instead of that it fires a 6,8mm (.268) projectile from a 48mm ceramic shell. This is a concept discussed by military specialists in the US Army and Department of Defense for many years now, because of the low stopping power and range of the current 5,56mm ammunition.
Because of the neckless shell, the magazine of the XM-3 is somewhat longer, but flatter than the stanag clips of the 5,56mm N calibre.
Tell me what you think of it. :D

Your efforts are not in vain. There is just a very difficult action to convert statisics from combat and machine tolerances from production. Here is a page with history since 1894 that takes about 2 hours to read but will give many of the H&K facts a run for their money.

It is also referenced in the "fame" section of the Stoner page reference in my bio on my artist page here at RR. Much has passed. Much is yet to come.

Well done! Interesting concept. Your comments, and those of Tallpindo are most interesting. Does your M3, and the Military M8, have any of the "accessories" that has made the Stoner 63 so popular with special forces? I am glad to learn that the military is looking to replace the poorly designed M16 (in its current configuration). Sadly; no matter how advanced the weapon system in the soldiers hands, training and ability of the individual is the bottom line of weapon effectiveness. I hope tomarrows weapons will be so foolproof that even an idiot, or intelligent person under extreme pressure and stress, can still operate the device effectively. From experience - I prefer my MAC-11/9 to an M16 - because of training and practice with the MAC. I dont want to be trained and become experienced in a weapon with the limitations of the M-16. LOL. Hope I am making some sense - in a short space at 3am. :-). Keep those designs coming - I love each and all of your weapons postings. Too bad there is no ranking of "awesome", your designs sure would qualify. Dwayne

Thanks, Dwayne. I am flattered. As a matter of fact I have made my M3 as modular as the real M8 is designed to be. It can be reconfigured into carbine, light sniper rifle and squad automatic and it accepts various tactical lights, scopes and targeting aides.

As a fellow modeler... I humbly yield to your superior gun-smithing skills. This is the most impressive design, model, execution, render, presentation...(did I leave anything out?) of a conceptual weapon that I have ever seen. Excellent doesn't even come close, so I hope a vote will count for something. :o)

Thanks, Moebius! Im glad you like my impression of it.

Void - you have created another masterpeice. Your attention to detail is astonishing! The angles and curves are pefect. The textures are outstanding. You model looks like a snapshot of the real thing. NOW...stop holding out and give a view of the whole thing!!! The closeup detail is great - but let us see the whole rifle - top bottom - left right - front/back! What you have given us is a snapshot of "Monolisa's big toe" ... now give us her "Smile!" :) Harada

mhm, looks nice, g-36/xm2 style, like it.

Very nice! Definitely got a bit of G36 in it... There doesn't seem to be a cocking handle/bolt, selector switch, safety catch or bolt retainer switch - are they on the other side? Just a few minor things - other than that, an excellent model! 10/10
