Description

Here is a B&W version of the first picture I posted here almost one year ago. This is the shot that got me addicted to photography. It also helped that I received so many encouraging comments under this image. The original posting was postworked with SuperBladePro to give it the eerie blue hue. This repost is slightly cropped on the left side. I think this improves it. I always worry about saturating my gallery with too many postings of the same subject, (as well as the fact that this tree will flatter any photographer) but now that I have posted well over a hundred shots here I feel confident that adding another won't put me in jeopardy of being redundant (or simply a hack). I finally found out what the Tree's official name is. :) Apparently it is one of the most Photographed trees in Canada. It's a good thing it's located in a fairly isolated area. I will once again give a little history here for those who haven't seen this before. This is a rare Limber Pine that died about 25 years ago. (rumour has it someone tried to fertilize it) It is estimated to be about 800 years old. In 1998 the tree finally fell over. It was erected by the townsfolk. -Frank Slide- In the background looms Turtle Mountain. In the middle of the night 101 years ago, this mountain collapsed and buried a whole town. Over 70 people were buried under the countless massive boulders. It is quite the amazing site that I hope to do justice with my Canon in the near future.

I think I remember this.. It is obviously gorgeous! Black and white touch-up gives it a more haunted and creepy feeling.. Excellent shot&postwork!

Everyone has favourite object for photographing. I can tell, that to a tree should be happy, that it has you. It became the most well-known tree in Canada (on extremely measure for me)... like photo. Keep the style and don't stop...

Has it really only been almost a year?.... Thought you'd been here for a whole lot longer than that! You feel like an old friend to me.... Happy Anniversary Matt....

Simply superb in BW, love the blue version too, but there is a starkness to this here that speaks to me....

The blue version had some kind of magical, spooky aura about it, while this one seems more realistic, has an almost documentary feel to it. They're both splendid, I could never choose which one I like better.

Beautiful shot. I was really struck bt it's dark sinister look, and somehow the fact that it overlooks Frank is quite fitting. When you say the town's people erected it, did they put it back up arger it fell down. I'd say it's a great starting picture, still worth a "vote" a year later. Happy Anniversary.

My goodness! I miss having time to take pictures now! This is beautifully dramatic, there is no way I can describe how much I love this in black and white? Do you have a larger version? This should be featured on the ansel adams website online...

I must echo the above commenters...I vividly remember this tree and this kind of ominous scene, and by the story of the slide you just told, I see the ominous feeling I get from this is justified. Happy aniversary and awesome shot!
