Description
"Forward Base"
My first try at putting a CG object into a photo, worked out pretty well I think. I spot some issues with both the camera angle and the lighting, and it could use more work. But.. it's time to move on to different projects. And I figured it's good enough, so I'd best dump it all up here while it's still 'new' :]
The drone was done for the January challenge ("Flying Machines") over at the Wings 3D forum here at R'osity. By request I tried a (very) quick Camo Test, but decided to stick with the pure white look, kinda like the "Predator" or "Global Hawk" drones. I also tried to make the material seem like some plasticy composite fiber material (hence the slight reflectivity). The whole thing isn't too big, I haven't tried to figure out the measurements, it was a build and design as I went kinda thing.. but it's somewhere around 2 meters/yards from nose to tail
The gun on the bottom is not a machine-gun, but a stabilized .50 caliber rifle, with probably less than a 45 round ammo capacity. The drone keeps a good distance from targets, and relies on superb accuracy rather than volume of fire.. a sort of flying mechanized Recon/Sniper unit. And it's meant to look somewhat "cheap" ( or "practical" at least ;] ) being built from a handful of parts that can be easily replaced in the field.
Other Pics:
Forward Base photo Alternate version of the pic above, made to look more, photo-ish
Sniper Team - Another photo composition, didn't think anyone would really like it, but it seemed pretty popular.
Front view - quick front view render
Dev 1 - A collage of screen shots taken in Wings, can see un-smoothed cages, poly-count stats etc.. Also a little interface there.. that's pretty tiny, maybe the size of a PDA (just something to fall back on when away from proper facilities).
Dev 2 - Another collage of w3d pics.. showing the various parts.
As always...
modeled in Wings 3D
rendered in Ray Dream 5.5
Post in Painter 5.5

Nice work! I like especially the sniper-picture... very cool. For the camo... did you try navy grey?
ComplxMind
"Cheap and practicle", that alone makes is perfect for the military. ha-ha. Excellent job. I agree with Alexander with perhaps a navy grey or maybe a desert tan color to help it blend with the image more and make it more realistic. Military and white really don't get along very well. It is an excellent model and your rendering really worked out great.
PeterChov
Argh.. Ok ok ;] --> Navy Grey
As I said I've moved on to other stuff, so I admit I just did this really quick. And the quality ain't too hot.. I matched the grey color to a Sea hawk chopper as best as I could.. Pic didn't come out too great though, oh well :P

That's the idea :]

True, but most the current drones are white, as I said was going for a Predator or Global Hawk look. But point taken
And no.. whatever you're thinking, I'm not doing it. No more suggestions, not listening! not listening!

heh.. j/k Thx for your comments all

Excellent Image Peter!! It was a blast to follow this one through on the Wings forum. BTW - I think the Navy gray looks best, but as you said the Predator and Global Hawk are white.

Your modelling skills are outstanding...this is a brilliant composition....

RayDream 5.5?! Sometimes I'm tempted to install it and not use my buggy Carrara 3.
PeterChov
Thx SHONNER, but Don't worry, it's a fine tradition of bugs spanning back to even the Ray Dream 5.5 days. From random "memory errors" that prevent you from going on without saving, closing, and re-opening the file.. To files getting corrupted for no apparent reason, I get all that good stuff too ;]
starts thinking about upgrading to something better again... ahh hek.. no time to learn new stuff right now, I'll stick to what I know and live with the shortfalls... for now
And thanks to Mac and Kenmo too
