Description

This is the last picture in a series of three on this location. Time to tell about Lothar! Devastation: the hurricane Lothar, December 26, 1999, resulted in more than 100 casualties in South Germany, France and Switzerland, and a loss of 180 millions metric meters wood (12 million m3 in Switzerland). As you can see on this picture, on a peaceful day in spring (see Lothar 1) the devastation is still visible. Winds with maximum velocities of 241 km/h swept over these countries. No forest can withstand such violence. See http://www.wsl.ch/wald/sturm for more information about this hurricane. This picture shows the situation of spring 2000. The railway is cleared from wood, so that traffic (train, hikers) can pass the area. The fallen stems lie in a eastward direction; the hurricane came - as storms usually pass this part of Europe - from the west. On Lothar 1 the remnants of the devastation are visible on the background and I thought it to be a good idea to tell you more about the history of this obvious peaceful scenery. Switzerland is not only the country of peaceful Sound of Music meadows, but the landscape and the mountains can show here (as in any mountain region) a grim face as well. Nevertheless there is so much to enjoy here outdoors! Great efforts to solve the riddle were made by Brian (majikart, twice) and David (bleachfix), but

George (georgedvore)

has beaten me! His answer is perfect! Congratulations! Minolta X-700 (Fuji Sensia II ISO 100, 300 mm) Thanks for your attention and your always valuable comments

Great shot to go with that reportage! Remember it well... have been in the South of the Black Forrest in my Easter holidays and have seen it for real. It's a thousands of pities seeing the result of this hurricane.

I did not hear the news of such a storm the day after Christmas. Sometimes our news can be so jaded and americanized...sorry

Well,At the risk of sounding like a novice when it comes to meteorology; I had no Idea hurricanes were way up in that region; either that or CNN news only covers the ones that are closer to the states.

excellent photography! but so tragic! devastating! imagining the way things used to look here. hard to understand why things happen sometime. these trees have been ravished, lying on the ground broken. this strong mountain is mournful.
