Description

Ode to A Hidden Treasure This is not a poem like I usually create this is a synopsis of a great life and a wonderful man that more people should of had the privilege of talking to. This is about Tom, now I met Tom before his wife passed away and she was a princess of highest ranking. They both decided to accept my boys like part of the family. Which was unusual, when you think about it but they were a unique set. Now some people will tell you that Tom was ornery and for the most part that was somewhat true. But I figure at his age he had every right to be ornery it seemed to go with his heart of gold. Now younger people would just pass an old man by not me though. If they had only taken the time to listen as he told a life story they would have found exactly what I did, a rare diamond in the rough. There was wisdom in his stories that should of been passed on to every one and adventure. He had lived a special life a life that sorely reminds me of the movie Second Hand Lions. He had tales that needed to be saved captured on paper or tape. Stories that some would call fish tales but they were totally true. He was a husband to his wonderful wife. He was not much liked by Poncho Villa in fact I

Tom was blessed ... for it doesn't get any better than a wife to love deeply, a life enthusiastically lived, and to die in your sleep a winner. Wow ... and top it all olff with a wonderful friend and writer like you to share him with the world. :o) CC

Wonderful story! Since I have moved to a retirement community, I have discovered many old-timers with amazing stories, and I always love the gleam in their eyes when they find a willing ear to tell it to! I'm sure you put that sparkle in Tom's eye as well! You have my condolences and sympathy for if "They both decided to accept my boys like part of the family" he was also like family! Hugs and Bravo for sharing!

O.L. .... another excellent, moving work! .... we treat our 'elderly' like 'has beens', unfortunately, for the most part .... SO SAD .... brian.

Beautiful and sad ... and so true. The elderly are history books brought to life. When we listen to them we step back in time ... and we see it in living colour and full animation. I work for a financial institution and have been to so many places, lived through so many adventures, and adopted so many grandparents I feel blessed. I have been through wars with them, grieved with them, and rejoiced with them and it only takes an attentive ear. I am lucky to have the opportunity. This is the up-side to my job ... the down side is seeing so many of them neglected, frail, almost penniless, and the feeling of helplessnes is so great. We do what we can but it will never be enough.

True words...I believe that there are stories in everyone...If we all would take the time to listen, we all would see each-other in a different light...
