Description

Just after the Martian dawn, Matronaut Des and crew are traversing the southern arm of Melas Chasma in order to investigate wind ripples on the chasma floor. These are actually large sand dunes. You don't see the walls of the chasma because (1) being a smaller planet, one cannot see as far on Mars as one can on Earth and (2) the cliffs are hundreds of kilometers in either direction, while the fartherest one can usually see something is five to seven miles, depending upon the terrain, but on Earth it is more typically ten to fifteen . For example, in the middle of a chasma, which is relatively flat, you won't be able to see the walls, but if you were at the top of Mons Olympus, the highest point on the planet, you'd have a view similar to a low-flying satelite or a high altitude flight. (That volcano actually pierces the thin Martian atmosphere and rises far above it!) Everything in this picture is by me, rendered in Bryce or Poser with a small amount of post work in Paint Shop Pro. Terrain was created using pictures from NASA/JPL. Thanks for looking!

Lol NASA helps a lot to get decent mars groundtextures

Nice work. Why don't you try making a model of the real rover ? Hint, hint. Then you could put it in freestuff.

similarly, if Mons sticks up far enough, you can see it from over the horizon..only thing I might suggest is a little more tread on the tires..an easy fix. Truly, these are Matrons of honor..;)

Actually, pakled, there is plenty of tread on the tires, but a lot of it is hidden by smooth fenders and it is hard to see the tread unless very close to the mule. I was rather disappointed about that because I modeled the Mule in Bryce and I had to do something like 50 or 60 boolyan "cuts" to get the tread; and then it hardly shows in the pictures!!

lgp692000, no, you just see some of the limitations of the Bryce Terrain Editor.

This is VERY cool!! I love the reddish terrain, and the rocks all over. The model is stunning also. Looks like a realistic exploration machine that could one day be on mars. This is very well done, its going on my favorite images list ;) excellent work. Keep it up
