Description

Stood up to stretch my back a bit. Oh that felt good. Shoveled the last of the dirt into the hole when the Cop pulled up in the drive way. Talk about cutting it close. He wanted to know if I had seen old man Jackson? Told him no and the less the better. He said he heard that me and Jackson didn't get along. I told him he was the master of understatement. Told the Cop that old Man Jackson was a jack-ass and a lair, hell he was a liberal. Cop asked me what I had been doing when he drove up. Told him it was none of his business, but I had been doing some gardening. Soon as the cop left, I cut some brush and piled it on the spot. Stomped it down pretty good and watered the whole garden. Over the next few days I worked and watered the Garden and soon that spot would blend in. The cops showed up in 2 cars at old man Jackson home 3 days later. The went in and looked a round. Got the paper that night and it said there was blood all over the kitchen and leading out the door, but no body. Don't know if anything was stolen, but signs of a struggle were all over. They did find 2 blood types. B- and A+ They will be coming over here soon to question me, but They won't find any prints from me. No evidence I ever was there, no body liked him. Sure as a DK's heart is made of ice the cops came in the morning. Asking me all those questions about how did we get along? Did I hate him? Any one in the neighborhood want to harm him Etc? Then they asked what I was doing out in the garden last week when the other officer payed me a visit? Told them I was gardening. They asked if they could look, and I told them sure go ahead. Then they asked if I knew my blood type? I told them A+. Would I mind giving them a sample? Yes I would.. They asked why the pile of brush and broken sticks? Told them that was my burn pile. They started to push the branches away and I told them to stop unless they had a warrant.. They pointed out I said they could look. And I said Yep you can look but not touch. Said they would be back with a Warrant for the search and some of my blood.. I wasn't worried, not enough to get a search warrant on. Well I was right. They did come around and kept on asking questions. Had a helicopter fly over. I suppose they were using that infrared scanner. Some say it will detect bodies in the ground as they are warmer than the earth. Can't tell through that brush pile though.. Well it's been a year now and they still don't know what happened to old man Jackson. I'd like to move but I can't yet. Have to wait a while. They made it know I was their #1 suspect. Told me there isn't any Statue of limitations on murder. They watched me and always came to question me at least once a week and always at odd times. Guess they be trying to wear me down. Well it got to the point the neighbors treated me like I had the Hoof and Mouth. They would not talk to me or even help me on projects I had. This is a small town and even the contractors would not take the job of replacing the cover over my car port. Even when I went to the hardware store to buy the material to do it myself, they said they were out. Well I could see a stack of the material not 15 ft away.. Well I'll just have to tough it out for the next 4 years I guess.. Oh it was hell, the kids called me names and one time right after I painted the house some kids sprayed words and names all over it. I called the cops but all they wanted to talk about was old man Jackson. Well it's been 5 years and they still don't know what happened to Jackson. His body never showed up. Spot in the garden is pretty well covered. I put the house up for sale as it, and that caused a new flurry of Cop visits. How come I'm moving? Why now? why not later etc? Where you moving to? Dumb stupid questions. House sold and I moved away. As soon as someone bought it the Cops asked the new owners if they could dig up the garden. A lot of hemming and hawing but the new owners gave in. Stupid Cops wasted all this time.. Don't matter. Closed all my bank accounts, got travelers checks and converted them into money. I read in the paper that they caught a guy who was wanted for 12 murders and he had some of Jackson's things. No I never killed Jackson. What did I bury in the garden? Yea see I'm a old man in my 60's and a neighbors dogs kept on coming over and killing my chickens and ducks. I shot 4 of his dogs and got arrested. Judge told me that to shoot them dogs no matter what they were doing was a felony and if I shot one more I'd go to jail for 2 years. Well there is a leash law, but not a protect your stock law. I shot one more dog that had killed my last chicken. Thats what I buried in the garden. Statue of limitations on this was 5 years

Yes, I agree it was a good story, although I read a lot, and everything was pointing to the main character in this story. Not just a hint of it possibly here and there, but outright directly at him, so I suspected something was up and had a feeling he was not going to be the killer, although it still held my interest for I wanted to read the twist at the end. See exactly what it was going to be this time from a different story teller. Thanks for sharing.

I said it before, and I'll say it again Frank: you must find yourself a publisher...this is expert writing!

Excellent written work! .... Maybe the guy could have actually shot and killed old man Jackson, and not the 'dogs'? .... since the old man was the 'real' problem? .... wink!

Great story but before seeking a publisher you should clean up the grammatical errors.
