Description

Shore Leave - Deck of the Diamantina (the last survivor of 130 river class frigates built in WW2) Well I told you I'd bring you back safely. It's Shore Leave time but we won't be back at the Q.M.M. although water & boat shots will often figure in my compositions. That's just how I feel about them. A bit of history on the boat in the picture; HMAS Diamantina (named after Lady Diamantina Bowen, wife of Queensland's first Governor). Their badge & motto was ... 'Who rules, protects'. Built by Walkers of Maryborough, she crewed 160 men in WW2 having been commissioned 27/4/45 as an anti-submarine frigate and fire support to the Australian Army at Bougainville. She carried Japanese High Command to surrender at Torokino and the documents of surrender were signed at Nauru & Ocean Island. Her Second Commission was in 22/6/59 in Sydney as an Oceanographic Research Vessel where she 'undertook world-class civilian/military oceanographic surveys, tests and training cruises in many parts of the Southern Ocean. In 7/2/60 she discovered the then greatest known deep in the Indian Ocean, the DIAMANTINA DEEP' (source: Q.M.M. pamphlet). I'm so proud of her.... TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT lol.
