Description
A macro of a Cicada. Taken with a Pentax Optio 33WR.
This image may not express what I'm about to write, but cicadas are like the cattle of the bug world. I've noticed that they are mostly stupid, lumbering, docile insects. And from some angles they're sort of cute... This one, however, is ugly. And it was not docile. In fact, it was downright agitated after I used the flash on it. It flew right at me and hit my chest with a resounding thump! I swatted and hopped around like a man afire in a fruitless attempt to remove the winged bovine. Well, needless to say, my shirt is now in the wash. Who knew cicadas were filled with so much goo?

I'm moving to Indiana next month and really not looking forward to cicadas. We have bugs in England, had two june bugs flying around bashing into walls (cracking plaster), but the Mid West has cicada swarms!!! Not looking forward to that at all. As for the picture, technically it's great. Just how close do you need to get to an ugly bug to take a shot like this? Too close I venture.

Funny story! And a fabulous macro shot.... too bad you smushed him. We had captured one once and put him in a bug house... the buzzing noise he made would scare the shit out of me, especially when you weren't expecting it... I think he knew what he was doing (too smart if you ask me)... Let him go after a day or so....

I always say, photography is a mean sport. At least cicadas are large and docile enough to try for a big macro. But most critters take a flash to be harmless distant lightning and ignore it, & your description fits the cicadas I have known - I sure never had any cicada go ballistic on me!!! Look up some pictures of Japanese cicadas ~ they can be really gorgeous.
