Description

'Arthur o Wynedd' (Arthur of Gwynedd) is an image we created for our work with the Centre for Arthurian Studies at the University of Wales. I've posted it mainly to share but look forward to your comments. This is how the 6th. Century historical Arthur may have looked: a cross between late Roman and Celtic. The up-and-coming 'King Arthur' film gets pretty close to it, but they still call him a "king" and no where in the original Welsh writings was he said to be a monarch. He was called a "dux belorum" - "leader of battles". His shield was said to have been adorned with an image of the Virgin Mary but we have placed the Christain 'Chi Ro' symbol on it until we can either get permission to use an exsiting image or create one ourselves. His sword, 'Caledfwlch' (Hard Lightning) - which through various translations ended up as Excalibur - would have been close to the Roman spartha sword, looking nothing like the medieval broadsword of the legends. Thanks for viewing, VH Costume and armour modeled and prepared by my esteemed colleague phurst. Lighting and finessing by me. Figure is a Michael 2 from DAZ.

Thanks kromekat, but it seems you're the only one who's had anything to say about it. There was me thinking this wasn't bad! Just shows you, doesn't it? VH

Thanks KP! It certainly does have historical significance and that's what the Centre for Arthurian Studies is all about. Their work is not only going to change how we view Arthur but is going to change some of British history... if their right! VH

Really shows how supposed facts change over time and get embellished. Hard to believe this is who Arthur was. Nice work though and informative. Cheers...

This is a wonderful model. and your POV is great too. I remember when i was an altar boy in the catholic church that the symbol on the shield adorned our st. peters medallions we wore with our cassocks. I was led to beleive it was the cross of saint peter (but i have been wrong once or twice LOL!)Top Work fella;)

Missed this one too. I think this is coming as close as possible to any historical Arthur! Excellent work.
