Description

Pollack Crater on Mars has been a curiousity ever since the Viking days because of its "white" hills in the crater's basin. They really are not white, but from space they appear to be. Actually they are likely a light sand color. At any rate, scientists are likely to check the place out. By the time of the Matronauts, there is a small waystation and science post located there. Dez has been sent there to leave off some needed medical supplies. She will stay overnight, visit with some old cronies, and head out the next day to rejoin her MR5 crew, who are 400 kilometers to the southeast. The waystation houses about 30 people and like all Martian settlements of this age, it is mostly underground. They even have a biosphere under the surface, but it is not much bigger than the ones found on the Mars Rover 4s. It is a fairly spartan existence, compared to the larger settlements, but much less cramped than living in a Mule or one of the Rovers. Dez will be happy to spend some time, however briefly, at the waystation. They are used as scientific research centers and as emergency shelters for expeditionary crews in trouble or needing a break from their confining life-style. Thanks for looking. Except for the buildings, which are by Ed Baumgarten, this one is all mine. The texture is a new one that I haven't quite worked out to my satisfaction, but I thought it worked nicely for this picture. The terrain, as usual, is made from actual NASA/JPL photos of the Martian surface. Jeremy
