Description

A while back I showed you a picture called "Return to the Columbia Hills" in which I used an overhead satellite image to produce a terrain in Bryce. However, the textures were less than desireable from that distance and I indicated that I'd like to try it again a bit differently. Hence, this picture. I used a recent NASA/JPL Mars Rover Spirit picture as the background by placing it on a plane. Then I went into PSP 5 and lopped off the lower section of the picture and turned it into a terrain consisting of that boulder-strewn ground. I added the original trimmed picture as the material for that terrain, then stretched it out to round out the rocks and placed it at a slight angle against the background picture--the original one. It worked a lot better than I actually expected, although I expect any 3D artist could see how I did it. Getting the light correct so there was not too much contrast in color between the terrain and the plane a bit tricky at first, but I actually ended up not having to add additional light sources. I then added the ol' Mars Mule--this time loaded to capacity with four matronauts and a lot of dust. I also moved the wheels individually so they went over rocks instead of through them. For once, I am pleased with the results. Hope you are too. Thanks for looking.

Great image, and I really appreciate the work you put into it. Thanx for the explanation. Without that we have a mistaken perception that these images are easier than they are. And continue this series. Show us another one where the matronauts are out of the vehicle and doing more exploration on foot.

Pakled, yes there is tread, but it is very hard to see unless you are very close to the vehicle. zescanner, yeah, I really do need to do more of that. I've been in a "Mule rut" lately, but part of the purpose of the series, is to give us a glimpse of the real Mars from the ground.
