The Scorched Land is the largest desert on Nerian. It is well named. In these times, it is scorched by the sun, but it was created during the last war of the ancient ones nearly 5,000 years past. It was born on a night when the sky rained great fires of destruction. For many centuries, it was a land of death. No one who entered it, returned. It is said that the early adventurers died of sickness, not of thirst. Yet a time came, when humans could venture into its realms and return to tell of their adventures therein. For centuries, the only way to get to the ancient city of Shansa was to sail the coastal route. Eventually, though, adventurers discoverd the great spring at B'narr and built a well around it. It was the only place that one could find the precious liquid in all the Scorched Land. A profitable trade route was established between the isolated Shansa and the rest of the Known World. For three-thousand years, the Well at B'narr never failed. Then came a decade of the worst drought in a 1,000 years. The following year, B'narr went dry. A young family from Shansa set out on a journy to the Known World, counting on getting water at the well. They were poor and not well-provisioned to start. With their last strength, the young couple and their young child reached B'narr, only to find it as decicated as the desert surrounding it. By the time they reached the well, the woman and child were already unconscious. He managed to drag them from the wagon, hoping to get them into the shade of the pavillion, but he was too weak. Instead, he had to settle for placing them under the wagon to protect them against the sun's heat. He rummaged through their water jars, trying to find a small remnant of water to give his wife and child. There was none. With his last strength, he released his team. In hardly better shape than himself, the horses wandered away to collapse beyond some distant dunes. By now, the man was delirius and, for a while, he staggered around aimlessly until he slumped to the ground and died. It would be over a year before the fate of the family was learned. By then, many rains had come. The Well at B'narr began to fill, once more. This tragedy happened years ago, but B'narr still endures, once again faithful in its promise of water for the thirsty and desperate. The memory of the tragedy also lingers, a traveler's tale inevitably whispered around the fires of those encamped around the Well of B'narr. The well's pavillion was my first ever attempt at using the terrain editor to model in Bryce. The grass was modeled in Plant Studio. Wagon and contents were modeled in Bryce 5.
