Description

***January 25th, 2005. The Huygens Probe has separated from the Cassini spacecraft and has begun its descent to the surface of Saturn's largest moon, Titan. After passing through the thickest part of the atmosphere, NASA and ESA scientists were able to get their first real glimpses of Titan's surface in the visible light spectrum. Previously only infrared wavelengths have been able to pierce the thick atmosphere. As surmised by scientists, lakes of hydrocarbons such as methane are seen in the region of the landing. Measurements by the Cassini spacecraft itself have also shown water ice on other regions of Titan's surface. Certainly it is an alien, and geologically active surface based on these images. Mission control has erupted into cheers, celebrating the Huygens mission as an early success. Provided the Huygens probe lands on solid ground, more analysis of the surface will be performed.*** Inspired by the arrival of the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft at Saturn this past week. World machine terrain. Thanks so much for your comments on my last render, 'Contemplation'...I really appreciate it! All comments/criticisms welcome on this one! Enjoy, --Mike Thanks to Rich2 for reminding me that Saturn's moon is Titan, not Triton! :-P Brain...not...working...today...

Wow, i love this one, pic and story alike! Very detailed scientific story! "...probe lands on solid ground more analysis of the surface will.." --- i hope the probe lands on solid ground, to provide us with more pictures ;)

I've been following the Cassini mission since it first started imaging Jupiter. Couldn't wait for this day! I'll bet the surface looks a lot like this, too! Check out http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/index.html for the latest.
