Description

***The Huygens probe is quickly approaching the surface of Titan, having been buffeted about by the winds of this giant moon of Saturn. It will impact the surface at about a speed of 7 meters/second. The scientific instruments have operated flawlessy during the 2.5 hour descent, sending an enormous amount of data to the Cassini orbiter for transmission back to earth. The last few minutes of operation after impact will be most helpful in determining composition of the surface, either liquid or solid, depending on where the probe lands. This image shows the Huygens probe is now below a large, thick cloud layer, with the main and lighter cloud deck that surrounds this moon visible near the horizon.*** This has been a fun series to do so far. For more information on the Cassini-Huygens mission go to http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/home/index.cfm Thanks for all your wonderful comments on the first one in this series, 'Huygens Probe Descent to Titan'. I really appreciate it and am glad you are enjoying it! --Mike

So you keep it suspenseful if the probe will land on solid or liquid ;) Excellent story and picture :) Surface and Atmo fit cool to the pics i had in mind after reading theories and pics about titan. Much brighter on Titan as i had expected for a moon this far from Sun ;o)
