Description
Hi everyone. Please meet Harold, one of the biggest collection of mistakes I've ever made (but made in the process of learning, so they're welcome, LOL).
Harold is:
Non-Uniform.
It's the first skeleton rig I build in Maya, and I did almost everything wrong. I put too much joints on the legs, which resulted in the utter impossibility to pose it using IK and in a real pain in the cephalothorax posing it with FK, not to mention animating it (which was my first intention). The result of this bad skeleton/rigging/binding/posing is under your eyes. Plus, it's the first time I try to use Maya Fur, and the result is some puffy pelouche-pet-thing and not a menacious one like I wanted, LOL.
Rational.
I tried to use rationality to depict nature: five segments in a tarantula's leg, hence five joints in the Maya representation of it. Sheeesh! Then, I also failed to do my homeworks properly: I realized only at the last minute that tarantulas do have two (or four) eyes, but that they have them in a single eye-sphere exactly in the middle of the head. So, the pelouche feeling increased and, at that point, a pet-name like Harold was inescapable. Plus, just like Maya was mocking me (and probably was, LOL), one of the grass-blades threw a sort of smile shadow on its face and the house was full. Sigh. ;)
B-Spider.
The only thing I really like in Harold is that, while I was trying to reach a realistic effect, it turned out like one of those big and ridicolous B-movie monsters of the Fifties. It's not by far intentional, so I have nothing to brag about, but hey, I like it.
_____
Modeled in NURBS (of course), rendered in Mental Ray with phisical-lens DOF and Fur and a very high AA setting to avoid graininess, it took almost 24 hrs to come out, hence the latin name. Better have a laugh than weep, huh? :)
Thanks for your attention and, as always, any suggestion and critic is readily welcomed. I've put all these mistakes in the store in the hope to avoid repeating them next time.
Have a wonderful week.
Stefano :)

Extraordinary...even though he is mistake filled and very hairy too, he is still scary looking. Excellent learning experience you are going through and one that will make your next try light years better than the first.

You might not know it but this is an exact Biayar portait, the dominating species of HD23079/2 on it's way to the daily network. Just gorgeous!!
lemonjim
really a great result, and fun to read your description! I saw one of these on a local trail two years ago, and it looked like this, except it was not smiling. I am smiling now. :-))
tresamie
Ok, as a menacing spider, this doesn't get it...but as a cute cuddly one, it's perfect! Maya astonishes me with its ability to do textures like this fur! Love the title and the latin ;) Excellent lighting as always.
Hawke
As an arachnophobic all I can say is aghhhhhhhhhh. That sends shivers right down my spine (really) - true to life or not. Just keep him away from me :)
Daniel7Mc

Great spider .. man, er um. Do you have, like groupies or something? Every post you make has a gazillion comments. Keep up the good work.

The story behind Harold's creation is almost as good as the fiction you write. 8) I suppose we'll let you off with this mistake though since you'll never learn if you don't go through this painful process. 8P

OMG he's tooo cute! At first I thought I'd clicked on Sambucus's name by mistake (he takes photos of spiders) Then when I double checked it was you I thought 'now he's doing photography?', but then saw it said Maya. All I can say is Wow, this is really great and if you hadn't pointed out the mistakes I'd never have known. :-D
frndofyaweh
OOOOOHHHH, f-u-u-r-r-y. hmmmmm, wonder if Bryce could fur it up?
Sambucus
Ooh, I got all excited. That
s a great spider, Stefano. Looks like a Brachypelma chalcodes (Mexican blonde tarantula) just after moulting. And while I
m being pedantic, theyve got eight eyes and the carapace is rarely hairy, but like I say, wonderful model. If you do another spider and need any ref photos, IM me. Here
s a vote from your (still) Brycing friend.Skygirl
I usually scream when I see a spider, but...I really like this one...he is kind of cute...dont know why...just like him :-) Ohhhh, and exelent, exelent model and work !!!
Swade
Man... I am not one for spiders Stafano... But this is one very cool looking spider. In spite of it being a mistake you have done wonderfully with it. That is some awesome hair on that thing too. You are doing some great work with Maya. Keep it up man. Nice piece of art and here is my Vote my friend. 8)

Hi there! This isn't exactly a fearsome spider as I understood you were attempting to create hehe i collect these creepy crawlers and I don't think you bummed out totally. The eyes here are a little to big, but the spider looks pretty much like my pinktoe except for it being black and not beige hehe check it out I'm sure you'll see the likeness between It's called pink-toe or Avicularia avicularia C
alvinylaya
Ya know I have this irrational fear of spiders so this one really makes my skin crawl, LOL. I really love what you did here. It looks so alive!!!

We had a trap door spider and a tarantula in our classroom in 4th grade. I wasn't afraid of them then, but they were in terrariums. If they were loose in my room, POW! ...they would be goners! :o) Seriously, this is excellent for the a first time. I have a Maya demo that I should try out sometime.
Wolfsgirl
OMG you built this.. this isn't a real spider.??? OMG it's just amazing.. mistake or no mistake..it's perfect!!! course everything you do is perfect hehe =) Great work!!!! vote
