it's a detail of a mechanical music machine, related to player-piano, goes back to somwhere between MIDI and steam threshers

so those are REAL cello and guitar etc, trapped among air driven servo controls and actuated by music box rollers literally built on small logs, some of the biggestof these things would play all the real instruments in a whole small orcestra or circus marching band!
