( E. ~ this nest appears to be a re-use of a downy woodpecker nest hole, but anyway it is in the remains of the last remaining large dead tree on the very end point of the peninsula ... can you imagine a more awesome childhood home ? a town house condo amid the food source with a view of the whole stretch and bend of Mississippi under Fort Snelling! )

this nest was incredibly nicely placed for observation, I was almost worried for its safety once ... this was the day most of the babies were out and several were in the tree branches above ~ so there were A LOT of tree swallows' nests, somewhere all around here, and we humans simply weren't seeing them.
