Description

August 11, 1999. A total solar eclipse will pass over Europe. In the Netherlands we will not be able to see the total eclipse, so we decide to go to ... Luxembourg. However, the weather forecast the day before makes us change our plans the last moment, and we change our destination. We head for France! At 3.15 AM we leave our houses and driving through the rain - very encouraging weather for viewing a solar eclipse! - we cross the Belgian borders twice. Eventually we arrive somewhere between Amiens and Rouen. And, hurrah, the weather brightens up! The sun starts to shine and everywhere we see people in the fields preparing for the celestial show. Thanks to a kind Frenchman I obtain some foils to cover the telelens and you can see here the series of the moon covering slowly the sun. Minolta X-700 (Fuji Sensia 100, 300 mm & 2X TC & cropping) Thanks for your attention and your always valuable comments

It was indeed a once in a lifetime experience, I went to Cornwall to see the event, as that was the only place in the UK the totality could be seen from, Unfortunately I did not have the opportunity or equipment to capture it. Thank you for sharing this. V

I was in hungary at the balaton-lake on that day in 1999. Made some videos and pictures too. I think it was a "once in a lifetime" experience. Tell us more how the mood was in france.
I remember that many dogs in the neighborhood began to yowl short before it got dark, and during the total eclipse it was very very quiet.
People were quiet, dogs and birds were quiet and ther was no wind.
It was spooky and grand at once! Thank you for sharing the photos, hope you post more :-)

Fantastic your serie Jan-Carel !!!! It's the first time I seen it. I'm so happy to see once more the beautiful gift for my 34 years ;o)))) And this day, I gone with some friends to look at this little miracle of Mother Nature, it was magic, we where on a beach for 2 hours or more. The more funny and impressive was to look at all the sea birds, gull in particular who came on the stones and stay quiet as for the night. There where more than 10 less than 2 hours before (it was so warm in august...). It's a beautiful remind. Thank you for that my friend ;o))) Your shots are really very good, and so neat. And you've made a perfect presentation for all. I love it. Even some years too late.... A big vote !!!! Lol. I'm shure you are going to shot the one of today ! Mouaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa a very big hug and kiss for you Jan-Carel ;o)))))
