The fly is about 2cm in lenght and isnt a bloodsucking or meateating fly as far as i know... it was drinking nectar. Hope you like :o) Thanks for all your wonderful comments on my last upload:"Fumble Muffbungle" !! Many thanks, Enmos

OMG, that's one of the most scary, foul & disgusting looking flies I've ever had a misfortune to see! :D It's a 100% powerful macro, though. Brilliant work :)

Wonderful capture with out overexposing the flowers, fine detail and colors. The fly doesn't seem to be as vivid/rich as the rest of the image, but still a fine shot.

FOUND IT Thanks to Raj, who pushed me to search for it one more time. Thanks Raj !! Here is the info: The species is Tachina grossa, i couldnt find the common name in english. It belongs to the family Tachininae. The Tachininae are mainly parasitoids of lepidopterous larvae of stalk- and wood-boring habit or which are otherwise concealed (Clausen 1940/62). A number of genera, of which Bonnetia, Archytas and Eupeleteria are common, are natural enemies of armyworms and cutworms. Occasionally a species is recorded parasitic in trypetid larvae. Bigonicheta is distinct by attacking earwigs. Tachina grossa is the biggest fly in Western Europa. Reaching a length of up to 21 mm it is even bigger than any of our buble bees. A large species like this is in need of big hosts of course. The eggs are usually deposited in the fat caterpillars of the Eggar Moths, which is a family of impressive, owlet like moths.

Congrats, Jeroen! You are definitely the entomologist of RR! Noblesse oblige :) You did only not explain why it drinks nectar.... Excellent shot, verrry impressive!

Thanks for all your wonderful comments !! @jcv2: When the eggs hatch, the larvae feed off the caterpillar. The adults feed on nectar.

Nectar eating flys often gets colours to imitate wasps and bees with yellow and black colours. Some got quite similar bands even which makes birds hesitate to catch them. This species of fly you have photographed isnt so far gone in its path of mimicry, the size and colours makes me think it might become a bumblebee copy if evolution has its way. And no I cant ident the species in question theres literally thousands of fly species. ;)
