Description

A little further on my H.P.Lovecraft's Elder Race character for Poser... This time he has membranes on his wings! Also I just applied a simple 'leather' texture to it. It's in the default pose of course as it has no skeleton yet, but it's getting there. Tell me what you think.

Hmmm, its been a long time since I read Lovecraft and I'm trying to remember. I'm sure this was in At The Mountains of Madness but was it in one of the visions from Dreams in the Witch House? In anycase, this is looking good and to the description (all twelve pages of it!).

All I can say is...about time! About time someone models HPL entities, and so far so good...looks great! MORE MORE!

Phew finally some feedback! :) Yes you are correct philebus, it's "At the Mountains of Madness" that we get the best description, and this is where I'm getting my inspiration from for this model. In "Dreams in the Witch House" the main description is of the metal ornament that Gilman breaks from the balustrade of the terrace on the world with three suns. Soon after he sees one of the things (an Old One) walking with the Witch and Brown Jenkin. The description is quite brief in that story and I feel is only meant to make the reader aware that Gilman is travelling either through space and maybe time to other worlds where the Elder Race still hold dominance. Rather than building a mental picture for us, Lovecraft merely gives enough detail for us to say "oh, it's one of THOSE things!" I have to say I'm not fully happy with how I set up the tentacles... In "Mountains of Madness" Lovecraft describes them as being one tentacle that splits into five, then each splitting fiveways again, to make up a total of 25 tips per growth (grand total 125 for all five limbs). And while technically I've done that, I've been a bit lazy (scared actually) to do it how I envision that description. - You see my Old One has tentacles that extend out from the trunk then divide along xyz axis' (so, one up, one down, one left, one right and one straight out the middle... er... forward). And then it divides the same way again. While this does give the desired number of tendrils and can be applied to Lovecraft's description, I can't help but feel that he imagined them radiating out in a more polar array (five spreading out like the points of a pentagram or spokes of a wheel, then the points spreading out like this again. But more like tree branches/roots.) Which is even harder to model and rig, but I think would be more natural. I also think that even though the stories describe them as having 5x5x5 tentacles, people who use Poser might find posing this many digits daunting, so I'm even considering making an alternate sub-model to give him 5x3x3 tentacles - also a lot easier to model and rig! But this would only be as an alternative included with the product - or else I'd be guilty of deviating from Howard's vision as well. This is the hardest of his creatures (sorry, second hardest) to model and setup, so the following ones in the series should be a lot smoother sailing. The next ones in the series will be the Fungi from Yuggoth (a.k.a the Mi-Go), the Great Race (from "the Shadow out of Time") and the Deep Ones. Later on I'll tackle things like Cthulhu and his race, Nyarlathotep (in his many guises), Yog-Sothoth and the Whately Family, and Shub-Niggurath... Of course one of my favourite races will also be even tougher to do than the Elder Race... The Shoggoths! Poser doesn't have particle clouds, but I may have a way around that. At any rate, I'm thinking the Shoggoth will be so hard to make and so limited in functionality at first, I'm thinking of giving one away free with every one of the other models, just new morphs and additions with each package so you can collect the set. I am unlikely to do any August Derleth, Brian Lumley or Klarkash-Ton (sic) creatures, being a bit of a purist when it comes to my "Mythos," so sorry, no Hastur, Ithaqua or Cthonians. Thanks again, and keep up the comments.
