Description

Here's another macro picture taken with the Canon EF 50mm Compact macro lens. This time it's a Saddleback Caterpillar that was on a bush outside my window. The bad thing about this little guy is he is poisonous, so you wouldn't want one of those little black spines sticking you especially if you are allergic to something like a bee sting. To answer some of the other questions on my fly picture, yes I have 2 - 50mm lenses, one is a standard 50mm lens, and then I have a 50mm Compact Macro lens, which is a dedicated macro lens. Someone asked about the working distance. On the 50mm Compact Macro, the working distance is about 9.6 inches from the sensor to the end of the lens. What that means is, the end of the lens is about 5.4 or fewer inches from the subject. So you have a real short working distance, sometimes not that hot for bugs but on occasionally you do get lucky :o) Thanks for looking at my work and as always, I appreciate the ratings, comments and votes :o)

Oh, this is great. I can tell you are really enjoying your new lens. I love the way the macro blurs the distance and allows you to totally focus on the subject.

An unusual larva but be careful. There are a few caterpillars that should not be handled because of their stinging spines. Contacting the spines of a saddleback caterpillar is every bit as painful as a bee sting.
