Description

Words by Bob Dylan, pictures from various. All work done in Paint Shop Pro 6 For the full effect, read each verse in turn, starting from the top left. When written in 1963, Dylan raged at the generation of his parents that was preparing to needlessly sacrifice their children in war. Forty-one years later, as the generation of my parents has begun to do the same, I add my voice to his. Dylan

Every generation has it's share of of those who will perpetuate violence and those who strive for an alternative. In the end, can either extreme be right? Personally, I wish there was more value placed on reason and intellect in this world. Reason shows there must be some sort of balance. Intellect finds ways to achieve the balance. Neither seem to have any great value in America, where it must be the absolute truth as long as you're not voicing a complete lie. Dylan never talked about balance or solutions so much. Who does? Far more popular and dramatic to illuminate extremes. For myself, I'd rather not stand over anyone's grave.

In fairness to Dylan, Masters of War was one of his earliest songs, off I believe, his first album. Critics have cited the same sort of heavy-handedness you complain of. Later songs by Dylan about war and politics, such as A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall show a more self awareness and introspection. However, this does not impeach the vaule of songs such as Masters of War, as they still say things which need to be said. The true vaule of that song in particular, in my eyes, is that its relateable four decades after it was written.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling that thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. John Stuart Mill

A very poignant set of images that (unfortunately) perfectly illustrates Dylan's lyrics. Phil Ochs said the same thing in a slightly different way - "It's always the old to lead us to the war, it's always the young to fall". Rabid patriotism, religous fanaticism & economic greed have been behind almost every war ever fought by mankind. War will be eliminated only when we evolve to a state of consciousness that allows us to shed these outmoded & destructive attitudes & learn to communicate honestly & work cooperatively with each other to raise everyone up. "You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one"...

Your opinion is expressed well, only you forgot to add pictures of Osama Bin Laden, Sadam Hussein, Arafat, and a few others. I only wish that people who held "anti-war" feelings weren't so one sided. As Clausowitz said: "No one hates war more than a soldier..."

War IS a horrible thing, and should be avoided at all costs.... but sometimes it is the only thing that can be done. And I second Montanan's comments.

It's because people support war due to their fear that there is war.

Don't worry everyone, it'll be all over soon. Don't forget Bush et all doesn't care about you, just their wallets and billionaire(asshole) buddies. It amazes me how ignorant some people are. Nice work, Paul!

awesome. Kind of shows this bunch for what the are. warmongering liars. Thanks for a chance to comment- there are those who hide behind their contributions and allow no comment on their propoganda. Very Republican. No dissent allowed. And as for being "deep" the words are deeper than w's IQ.

I like this piece in spite of not agreeing with the idea. You left out Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, and the PLO, etc. It puzzles me you are allowed to use copyrighted material, especially the words to Dylan's song here.

Good work, it is however disgusting, how more than 400 million US citizens allow themselves to be governed by a fascist regime
