Description

I surprised myself with this image. Normally, I don't return to older work. Even though I often post several renders of the same project, and I seldom post them in chronological order, these were all done the time I was first creating the image. This one, however, is a return to an early project. I decided that one of the comments on "Crystal Beach" was right on the money, so I decided to take Deevee's advice and touch up the background (the island costlines were too straight, and the sand a bit too crisp. So, in a rare fit of creative energy, I returned to the file and added this heart model. I created the heart with bezier paths in Strata Pro 3.9 and exported as a DXF). Texturing the heart was a bit difficult, as I was unhappy with the plain red glass. I just couldn't get enough interesting reflections on it and I couldn't find a refraction index that looked really good. So, I duplicated the heart, shrank it a bit inside the larger heart, and changed the inner heart texture to red cathedral glass. By the way, I do NOT know why the darn thing looks lopsided. The model was fine, so I suspect it has something to do with the angle and the focal length. I decided not to fixate on it and just move on. Maybe my heart really IS lopsided... that could explain a few things from my wonderfully wasted youth... Thanks to everyone who commented on the original image, and I hope you enjoy another visit to Crystal Beach. I think this is really cool - and the heart doesn't look lopsided....it's just buried a bit!

I mean the top of it is lopsided! ;-) And I still can't figure out why. ;-(

Excellent job, Mike! I don't think anyone would have noticed the lopsided if you hadn't mentioned it! :^)

Wonderful work Mike! I agree, no one would have noticed the heart if you hadn't said anything. I have a "neat" suggestions if you are not aware that it can be done: If you make a duplicate of the outside heart, make it the same texture as the terrain and select it and the terrain, you can make a boolean object (difference) that will make a cutout of the heart in the sand so it will look even more realistic sitting there in the sand. Just something to play with in your spare time :-). Love the textures and the reworking you did.

If the heart was made from meta-blobs, then I would understand why there might be some distortion in the heart shape, but as a DXF import I'm stumped. Anyhow I like the surrealism in this scene, actually I thought it was a Bryce render at first glance, because the one thing that Bryce does really awesome, is glass textures...hmm, better revisit the Vue glass again !

~Cheers~

Vue has some hidden charms, but I haven't used it in years. Just no time, I'm afraid.
