Wow, I looked at your gallery and discovered You would know reptiles ! so this is a compliment. (I am so simply sure this is a baby snapping turtle (by the Mississippi River) but somebody else disputes this ~ maybe you would know the answer.)

Definately a Snapper, easily shown by the desticntive claws and scales. They get huge! This one has a way to go.

I would say its most likely a snapper. Since its so dark colored with no yellow or green showing. Also with the ridges on the shell and the width to its height, it sure isnt a box turtle. So I would say its a safe bet to say its a snapper for sure.

Yes and the infant's eyes are so big too! Claws and 'beak' and this colouring, nifty spikings on the shell, etc, all seemed clear marks of the snapper to me, but I can't claim to know how many variations may exist or not. Snappers get to about the size of a grocery bag ! a right disturbing size, and then they have an alarming capacity to reach much further over their back than one would ever expect and attempt to relieve one of a few phalanges - with the abruptness of a firecracker. I only needed one session before I elected to mostly not mess with ripened snapping turtles. I am told they will take ducklings by the feet, down and drown them, and that this is why loons ride their precious few young ones upon their back.
