Description

The small building was a unique bookstore called the Common Reader. Inside was a wealth of old books, papers, manuscripts, postcards, prints and also antique pieces from the area such as teacups and saucers, candleholders, jewelry, etc. Nothing new. The side you see here that is part of the graveyard was especially interesting to me. The stacked stone foundation abutted a garden which held within it some of the tombstones! I was shocked to see them half-exposed to the light from beneath ferns and brambles. The cemetery itself is open for public entry but let me tell you of my first visit...I parked my car, got out, started taking pictures, and noticed I was being watched. I figured it must be because they don't get many visitors. After all, the town doesn't have through traffic except to the homes because of the Quabbin just on the other side (east). I entered the graveyard and began reading the headstones row by row for names, dates, etc. I then heard the church bell tolling. It was not for a particular hour, as it was roughly 1:15pm, nor a day, it being a Tuesday. I shrugged it off. I then noticed people, no two walking together, entering the 'church'...one of several for such a small town. Each one looked down the street at me before entering...not a smile, not a wave of recognition, not a simple nod of acknowledgement. I was getting a bit spooked on this because of the prior dreams...as the last man entered, the door was shut.

I love this picture....it's spooky yet not, if that makes any sense? As for the townspeople, folks in New England aren't really noted for their friendliness, but this lot you ran into sound like they were really especially cold...Can't wait to hear more!!

I love reading the headstones on very old graveyards. The feeling is strange and sad but interesting. All these people had family and a story. It is the most real contact with the past. Great capture.

Great shot ... and love the tale. I also love to read headstones. There is a lot of history there. Can't wait to read the next one in your series. Very interesting and intriguing, Ramona.
