Description

Originally scheduled for retrofit to re-enforce her unsually thin plate, HMS Hood was diverted to take part in the hunt for Bismarck, the 52,600 ton super German battleship. HMS Hood was battle cruiser built for speed and gun power over protection. In the early morning hours of May 24, 1941, HMS Hood closed rapidly on the Bismark and as she turned to open fire with all her guns, a shell shot by Bismark pierced the thin plate of her forward magazine and she was torn apart by a vast explosion. There were three survivors of a crew of over 1000 souls. Bismark was herself sunk three days later in another engagement after her rudder was jammed by an air torpedo attack. The British battleships Rodney and King George V closed and reduced Bismark to a floating hulk. A torpedo by the cruiser Dorsetshire finally sent her to the bottom with a loss of over 2000 of her crew. This scene depicts the explosion of HMS Hood under barrage from Bismark. Very moody picture! Battleship Bismarck was sunk by her own crew, however. The survivors have kept telling that for 63 years. Shipwreck examinations have corroberated this. Anyway, an isue of vanity, the result was the same.

lookoo is correct. When the Germans realized that the ship couldn't be saved, the Captain ordered the ship to be scuttled (sank). But you image is awesome!

Nice Job. I seriously doubt the story the German sailors are telling. If they had "decided" to sink her, there would have been fewer casualties on their side, since they could have allowed the men time to abandon ship.
