Description

This is a photo, taken yesterday, of the ruins of the 12th Century Barnard Castle, now in the care of English Heritage. It is perched high on a spur of rock, overlooking the River Tees, in the small thriving historic market town of Barnard Castle, in County Durham ~ known to it's residents as Barney. It was once one of the largest castles in Northern England, and was damaged by Sir Henry Vane in 1610 when he used a lot of the stone to rebuild his favourite residence, Raby Castle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you for looking, and for any comments, which I really appreciate. Great capture Gordon! An unusual angle! Hate to think what happened to you, if you were slung in a dungeon here!! It's amazing it's still standing after all those centuries, they don't build castles like that anymore!!
