Description
This is a photo, taken yesterday, of the ruins of the 12th Century Barnard Castle, now in the care of English Heritage. It is perched high on a spur of rock, overlooking the River Tees, in the small thriving historic market town of Barnard Castle, in County Durham ~ known to it's residents as Barney.
It was once one of the largest castles in Northern England, and was damaged by Sir Henry Vane in 1610 when he used a lot of the stone to rebuild his favourite residence, Raby Castle.
